VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING
Vegetable Companion Planting is the study of how some plants grow happily together. And others just plain don’t!
Succession Planting is when a certain food crop is finished producing for the year. That same spot of ground is then used to plant something else. If the two plants “don’t like each other,” you will have disappointing results.
The Vegetables, ETC. in this article are listed ALPHABETICALLY.
Plants have idiosyncrasies. Some don’t grow well together because:
- They require a different soil pH.
- Produce chemicals that will “put off” certain of their neighbors.
- Don’t like shade produced by taller vegetables.
- Others require shade.
- Don’t appreciate being crowded, and will compete for space, both above the ground and below it.
- And some plants are complete “hogs” for water and nutrients.
- Certain plants attract insects and diseases that will spell trouble for neighboring plants.
- And, there are always exceptions to every rule.

IT’S JUST NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE!
Companion Planting is not an exact science. It has been studied for decades, and there still is no way to be certain about some things except by using the “trial and error” method.
One thing you can be sure of is that there will be differing opinions on just about everything connected to “How To Make A Garden.” For instance, some people claim you can easily grow Tomatoes with Cabbage. Others say they are like “two kids fighting in a sandbox,” and need to be separated.
When working up your Garden Planner for this season, it is good to refer to this Vegetable Companion Planting List to cut down on the possibility of an unsatisfactory crop.
Some relationships are bound to be more difficult than others. Plants that get along well together are listed as “LOVES.” Plants that battle things out are listed as “HATES.”
Flowers, Herbs, and Fruits are often planted in or near the Vegetable Garden, so I have mentioned all four in this Companion Planting List.
- Vegetables are listed in BLACK.
- Fruits are in RED.
- Herbs are in GREEN.
- Flowers are in BLUE.
The Vegetables, ETC. in this article are listed ALPHABETICALLY.
Let’s get started!
COMPANION PLANTING LIST
Melons, Rhubarb, and Strawberries have been included in this list since many people agree the garden just isn’t complete without them.
ASPARAGUS
LOVES: Apple, Apricot, Artichoke (Globe), Asters, Basil, Beets, Cabbage, Carrots, Cherry, Cilantro, Coriander, Cucumber, Dill, Grapes, Horseradish, Lettuce, Marigold, Nasturtiums, Nectarines, Oregano, Parsley, Peaches, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Plums, Rhubarb, Sage, Spinach, Strawberries, Thyme, Tomatoes
HATES: Broccoli, Chives, Fennel, Garlic, Gladiolus, Mint, Onions, Potatoes, Swiss Chard
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Asparagus is a perennial. Vegetables and herbs that can be planted once and will keep coming back year after year are always a bonus. Just be sure of your planting location before you dig the hole. It will be “living there” for a very long time. Take it from someone who has dug up an entire asparagus bed by hand and moved it elsewhere. It is definitely not a fun thing to do since the roots seem to be a mile long.
BEANS (BUSH)
LOVES: Alyssum, Arugula, Beets (Beets can be grown with Bush Beans, but not with Pole Beans.), Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Catnip, Cauliflower, Celery (Plant Celery sparingly around Bush Beans.), Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumber, Currants, Eggplant, Gooseberries, Grapes, Horseradish, Jerusalem Artichoke, Kale, Kohlrabi (Kohlrabi can be grown with Bush Beans, but not with Pole Beans.), Lettuce, Marigolds, Melons, Mustard, Nasturtium, Okra, Pak Choi, Parsnips, Peas, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Petunias, Potatoes, Potato (Sweet), Pumpkin, Radishes, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Rutabaga, Sage, Salsify, Spinach, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Summer Savory, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
HATES: Basil, Chives, Fennel, Garlic, Gladiolus, Leeks, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Onion, Parsley, Shallots, Sunflower
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Some plants do well when grown with Bush Beans, but don’t like Pole Beans or Runner Beans at all.
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Marigolds are frequently planted in the vegetable garden to chase away bugs. Just be certain of your variety! Beware of the Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida). It is often used as a Tarragon substitute in Mexico. Sounds harmless enough, but it behaves like a herbicide around Beans and anything in the Cabbage Family.
BEANS (POLE)
LOVES: Alyssum, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Catnip, Cauliflower, Celery (Plant Celery sparingly around Pole Beans.), Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Currants, Eggplant, Gooseberries, Grapes, Horseradish, Jerusalem Artichoke, Kale, Lettuce, Marigolds, Melons, Mustard, Nasturtium, Okra, Pak Choi, Peas, Petunias, Potatoes, Potato (Sweet), Pumpkin, Radishes, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Rutabaga, Sage, Salsify, Spinach, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Summer Savory, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
HATES: Basil, Beets (Beets can be grown with Bush Beans, but not with Pole Beans.), Chives, Fennel, Garlic, Gladiolus, Kohlrabi (Kohlrabi can be grown with Bush Beans, but not with Pole Beans.), Leeks, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Onion, Parsley, Parsnips, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Shallots, Sunflower
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Bush and Pole Beans can be planted with members of the Cabbage Family (Brassicas). Nevertheless, I would give them a little space since Brassicas are exceptionally heavy feeders. Unless, of course, you don’t mind frequently carrying the plant food and water out to your Beans. Brassicas are great succession plants after the Beans have been harvested.
BEETS
LOVES: Alyssum, Asparagus, Basil, Beans (Bush), Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Catnip, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Chives, Collards, Corn, Cucumber, Garlic, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Onion, Pak Choi, Peas, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potato (Sweet), Radishes, Rutabaga, Shallots, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
HATES: Beans (Pole), Fennel, Mustard. Raspberries
BROCCOLI
LOVES: Basil, Beans (Bush), Beets, Carrots, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Broccoli.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigold, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Asparagus, Beans (Pole), Bok Choi, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkin, Radishes, Rue, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Brassicas, the Cabbage Family, include Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Mustard, Pak Choi, Radishes, Rutabaga, Turnips, and Watercress. Brassicas and anything in the Squash Family are both heavy feeders. Keep them apart. This is just like the dinner guest that takes half of the mashed potatoes before passing the serving bowl around. In the end, something is going to be deprived. While Cabbages and the Squash Family might survive together, you will be constantly carrying the plant food bucket around to satisfy their appetites.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS
LOVES: Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Carrots, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Brussels Sprouts.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Separate all members of the Cabbage Family. They are all targeted by the same diseases and insects. You will have swarms of cabbage butterflies if you grow them together.
CABBAGE
LOVES: Asparagus, Beans (Bush), Beets, Carrots, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Cabbage.), Chives, Daffodils, Dill, Garlic, Hostas, Hyacinth, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Potatoes, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme, Tulips, Yarrow
HATES: Alyssum, Basil, Beans (Pole), Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Pumpkins, Radishes, Rue, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Brassicas don’t get along with Nightshades. They both require a different Soil pH. And both are “heavy feeders.” They might survive side by side, but they won’t do nearly as well. Nightshades are Eggplant, Peppers, Potatoes, and Tomatoes. Eggplants especially are “Divas”!
CARROTS
LOVES: Alyssum, Asparagus, Beans (Bush); Beans (Pole), Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chervil, Chinese Cabbage, Chives, Collards, Cucumber, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce (Leaf), Marigold, Melons, Mustard, Onion, Pak Choi, Parsley, Peas, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Radishes, Rosemary, Rutabaga, Sage, Salsify, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Swiss Chard, Tomato, Turnips, Watercress
HATES: Celery, Dill, Fennel, Parsnip, Potato
CAULIFLOWER
LOVES: Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Carrots, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Cauliflower.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Members of the Onion Family and the Cabbage Family LOVE each other, and grow happily together.
CELERY
LOVES: Alyssum, Basil, Beans (Bush), Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Chives, Cilantro, Collards, Cucumber, Dill, Garlic, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Mustard, Nasturtium, Onion, Pak Choi, Peas, Radishes, Rutabaga, Sage, Spinach, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Thyme, Tomato, Watercress
HATES: Beans (Pole), Carrots, Corn, Fennel, Parsley, Parsnip, Potato, Turnips
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Never plant Fennel next to anything that you intend to put in your mouth!
CHINESE CABBAGE
LOVES: Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Carrots, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Chinese Cabbage.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Crop Rotation is if, for example, you plant a row of Cabbage and a row of Kale one year. Next year, try to switch them around. Cabbage Family “relatives” cannot be rotated successfully.
COLLARDS
LOVES: Basil, Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Carrots, Catnip, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Collards.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigold, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rue, Rutabaga, Salsify, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
CORN
LOVES: Amaranth, Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Cucumber, Dill, Geranium (White), Jerusalem Artichoke, Lettuce, Lupines, Marigold, Melons, Morning Glory, Onions, Parsley, Parsnips, Peas, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkin, Radish, Soybean, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Sunflower
HATES: Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Fennel, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Mustard, Pak Choi, Radishes, Rutabagas, Swiss Chard, Tomato, Turnips, Walnut, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Corn doesn’t like competition for food and water. In order for the kernels to be filled with juice, they must have adequate moisture during the growing season. This is hard to do if they are planted right next to another very demanding vegetable.
CUCUMBER
LOVES: Alyssum, Asparagus, Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Cucumber.), Chinese Cabbage, Chives, Collards, Corn, Dill, Garlic; Horseradish, Jerusalem Artichoke, Kale, Kohlrabi, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigold, Melons, Mustard, Nasturtium, Okra, Onion, Oregano, Pak Choi, Peas, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Petunias, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rutabagas, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Sunflower, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
HATES: Fennel, Potatoes, Rue, Sage
NOTE: Cucumbers are sweeter when planted near Sunflowers. Cucumbers can then use the Sunflower stalks as a natural trellis.
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Some plants do well with certain plants in moderation, but if you plant them together too thickly, it spells trouble.
EGGPLANT
LOVES: Amaranth, Basil, Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Chives, Lettuce, Marigold, Okra, Peas, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkin, Radishes, Spinach, Tarragon, Thyme, Tomatoes
HATES: Apples, Apricots, Blackberries, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cherry, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mustard, Nectarines, Pak Choi, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Raspberries, Rhubarb, Rutabagas, Strawberries, Turnips, Walnut, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Walnut Trees, Cedar Trees, and any type of Conifer cause great problems for the gardener. The roots and leaves exude a chemical that is harmful for many plants. Plus, they greedily eat up nutrients that other plants and trees need. Keep them at a safe distance!
JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE
LOVES: Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Borage, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Jerusalem Artichoke.), Collards, Corn, Cucumber, Daylily, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Melons, Mint, Mustard, Pak Choi, Radishes, Rhubarb, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Sunflower, Turnips, Watercress

KALE
LOVES: Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Celery, Carrots, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Kale.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kohlrabi, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress
VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Always try to separate vegetables that are “heavy feeders.” Brassicas, for instance, are water and nutrients HOGS. When I was a girl, there was one season when our cabbages were just huge. They were also filled with so much moisture that they burst in half when my Mom rapped them sharply with a butcher knife. The inside of the cabbage was covered with beads of moisture. Made the best sauerkraut and cole slaw ever! This is what happens when plants don’t have to compete with neighboring plants for moisture and nutrients.
KOHLRABI
LOVES: Beans (Bush) (Kohlrabi can be grown with Bush Beans, but not with Pole Beans.), Beets, Carrots, Celery, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Kohlrabi.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigolds, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Thyme
HATES: Alyssum, Beans (Pole) (Kohlrabi can be grown with Bush Beans, but not with Pole Beans.), Bok Choi, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Collards, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Fennel, Grapes, Horseradish, Kale, Melons, Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes Lucida), Mustard, Pak Choi, Peppers (Hot), Peppers (Sweet), Potatoes, Pumpkins, Radishes, Rutabaga, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Strawberries, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watercress

VEGETABLE COMPANION PLANTING: NOTE
Tomatoes must have plenty of moisture each season to produce lovely, juicy Tomatoes. If they are deprived, the fruits will be drier, and so disappointing. For that reason, it is best to keep anything from the Cabbage Family away from them. The same goes for any plant that is a “heavy feeder.”
TURNIPS
LOVES: Basil, Beans (Bush), Beans (Pole), Beets, Borage, Carrots, Chamomile (Don’t plant Chamomile too thickly with Turnips.), Chives, Dill, Garlic, Hairy Vetch (This is a purple-flowered ground cover.), Jerusalem Artichoke, Lavender, Leeks, Lettuce, Marigold, Mint, Nasturtium, Onions, Oregano, Peas, Petunias, Rhubarb, Rosemary, Sage, Salsify, Shallots, Spinach, Squash (Summer), Squash (Winter), Swiss Chard, Thyme, Tomatoes

HAPPY PLANTING! Susan
This is very interesting and very well written! So much better information! Who would’ve thought that plants can only thrive with certain other plants.
Thanks, Jennifer. I’m so glad you like the article, and hope you find it useful in the years to come.
